Aussies are up in arms over the recent decision by People First Bank to close multiple branches, leaving some customers with a 150km drive to access face-to-face services. This move has sparked a heated debate, with many questioning the bank's commitment to its customers and the communities it serves. The Financial Sector Union (FSU) has accused the bank of prioritizing profits over its customers, highlighting a 7% profit increase in the last financial year. Despite a 2022 commitment to no more branch closures due to the merger, the FSU reports a 40% slump in branches since the merger of People's Choice Credit Union and Heritage Bank in 2023. This has left towns like Oakey and Pittsworth in Queensland without any bank branches at all. People First Bank's chief customer officer, Maria-Ann Camilleri, defended the closures, citing a shift in customer preferences towards online banking. However, critics argue that this decision disproportionately affects older customers, people with disabilities, and small businesses that rely on in-person banking. The bank has pledged to support customers through this transition, offering alternative roles for affected employees and ensuring in-person banking and cash access remain available, albeit with some limitations. The controversy raises important questions about the role of community banks in supporting local communities and the balance between profit and customer service. What do you think? Do you agree with the bank's decision, or do you think they should have done more to support their customers and communities? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
