As the festivities unfold, many revelers find themselves recovering on Boxing Day while local council staff tirelessly work overnight to clear away an astonishing 20 tonnes of waste left behind from a spontaneous dance party that took place the previous day.
This gathering, often referred to as "Orphans Christmas" or "Backpacker Christmas," transformed the beach reserve into a lively spectacle filled with DJ tents, Santa hats, and festive red swimwear. Despite the large turnout, New South Wales Police reported that everything proceeded without incident, with no arrests or fines issued, ensuring a smooth celebration for all involved.
Randwick City Council officials indicated that cleanup efforts began around 7 PM the night before, and by Friday morning, staff had successfully collected more than four truckloads of rubbish. "I want to express my gratitude to all our rangers, lifeguards, and waste management teams for their exceptional efforts," stated Randwick Mayor Dylan Parker.
He also acknowledged the assistance from Waverley Council, which dispatched additional crews from nearby Bronte Beach to aid in the cleanup. However, Mayor Parker expressed disappointment over some individuals choosing to litter and engage in public urination, despite prior warnings about the area being an alcohol-free zone.
The council had taken significant measures to ensure the safety and cleanliness of the beaches and parks, including installing extra signage aimed specifically at backpacker hostels to communicate the alcohol restrictions clearly. "We were prepared for large crowds at Coogee Beach, despite initial plans indicating that the gathering was intended for Bronte Beach. We deployed extra staff, bins, and rubbish bags while collaborating closely with NSW Police," remarked Mr. Parker.
Waverley Council had earlier cautioned against festivities at Bronte Beach, noting that half of the park was cordoned off due to construction at the Bronte Surf Life Saving Club. Earlier this year, the council allocated an additional $220,000 to manage waste, security, and toilet facilities during Christmas Day celebrations, prompted by the overwhelming turnout of over 15,000 people at Bronte in 2024. The chaos, excessive noise, and substantial mess from last year's event led to these proactive steps.
Waverley Mayor Will Nemesh explained how the council executed a strategic communications campaign aimed at discouraging large gatherings this year. "Knowing we cannot prohibit access to public spaces and always keen to be prepared, we developed a comprehensive management plan to address crowd control, potential misconduct, traffic, noise, and the subsequent cleanup," Mr. Nemesh noted. He happily reported that the warnings appeared effective, resulting in a peaceful atmosphere at Bronte Beach. "I am relieved to see that we did not repeat the chaotic scenes of 2024, and I believe the local community shares this sentiment," he added.
In the midst of the cleanup, locals stepped up to lend a hand. Naoki, a resident in the area, arrived at Coogee's beachside reserve the following morning, ready to assist. "I witnessed quite a hectic scene here yesterday," he shared with the ABC. "I’m picking up glass because it’s crucial for pets and children to safely enjoy this space."
Another local, John, expressed pride in his suburb’s reputation for hosting lively parties. "I think it’s fantastic," he remarked. "They need a place to celebrate, after all. We’re not as uptight as Bronte; we enjoy having young people around. We saw all the footage from last night, and we thought it was wonderful."
Meanwhile, Bruce seemed unfazed by the previous day's events, casually playing soccer on the grassy patch with his young children. "I guess everyone in their twenties just wanted to have some fun," he reflected. "I think they feel a bit out of place at the other beaches."
