The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has taken a stand against the Trump Administration's health policies, led by Dr. Susan Kressly, the 2025 president. In a bold move, AAP released its own vaccine guidance, recommending COVID-19 shots for all children under 2, a significant departure from the U.S. government's guidelines. This decision came after U.S. Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced that healthy children would no longer be advised to receive the COVID vaccine. Dr. Kressly, representing 67,000 pediatricians, emphasized the necessity of protecting children's health, stating, 'We felt we had no choice but to act.'
The AAP's assertive stance led to two lawsuits in 2025. The first lawsuit challenged the changes to the COVID vaccine policy and Kennedy's decision to replace members of a key federal vaccine advisory panel. The second lawsuit addressed HHS's reduction of federal grants to AAP. These legal battles highlight the AAP's commitment to advocating for children's health and its willingness to confront the administration's policies head-on.
