Mark Williams' Health Transformation: A Major Win for the Phoenix Suns (2026)

Mark Williams' Health Triumph: A Major Win for the Suns

The Phoenix Suns' acquisition of Mark Williams during the 2025 NBA Draft was a bold move, but his health was the key to unlocking his potential in the desert.

When the Suns traded for Williams, they were well aware of his previous health struggles, having played just 106 games over his first three seasons. The Los Angeles Lakers' decision to rescind a trade due to Williams' failed physical was a stark reminder of the risks involved. However, Suns General Manager Brian Gregory was confident that Phoenix could provide Williams with the care and support he needed to stay on the court.

And Gregory was right. Williams has already played 47 games this season, breaking his previous career high of 44 games in a single season. With 30 games remaining, his availability is a major win for the team.

Four of the games he missed were planned knee management days in back-to-back pairings, and the other was a one-game suspension for an altercation with New Orleans Pelicans guard Jose Alvarado. Suns coach Jordan Ott praised Williams' commitment to his health, saying, 'Major win for him. I think when you first come here and you hear about the plan of no basketball, I think that’s tough for a basketball player, so major win for him.'

Ott added that Williams' maturity and self-awareness have been key to his success. 'He’s such a mature adult that he owns his own development. He knew this was a big piece. It was a big piece to this year, and he’s superseded any expectation we’ve had for him, not only as being available but as a player, and we’re so excited to see what’s next.'

The coach also noted that Williams' health has created a positive momentum for the entire team, especially as they look forward to a full offseason for the 24-year-old to continue growing.

Jalen Green's Injury Luck: A Polar Opposite

In contrast, the Suns' acquisition of Jalen Green in the same offseason presented a very different health scenario. Green, who was traded to replace the oft-injured Bradley Beal, has already played fewer games this season than Williams. A nagging hamstring issue has limited him to just five games played with 30 remaining, down from 67 games as a rookie and only six missed games across the previous three regular seasons.

Green has played in just one game since exiting a loss to the Atlanta Hawks on January 23 with 'precautionary right hamstring tightness.' He returned to the bench on January 30, playing 16 minutes before exiting with a hip contusion. Both the hamstring and hip have been listed on the injury reports for the three games he's missed since.

Despite the challenges, Green has handled the situation well, according to Ott. 'He does have like a youthfulness to him, himself, that I think helps him on some of these down days where he never really feels how down he is. And now that the end is in sight, like he can feel that he’s very close,' the coach said.

Green is considered day-to-day, as is Devin Booker (ankle), but there's an extra element of momentum now that he's back on the court and trending toward playing. 'When he steps on the court, everyone feels kind of who he is,' Ott said. 'That’s the exciting part is when he gets out there, everyone feels it just by him being out there and in the jersey.'

Controversy and Counterpoint: The Impact of Health on Team Success

While Williams' health has been a major win for the Suns, Green's injury struggles raise an interesting question: How does the health of individual players impact the success of a team? Some might argue that a player's health is beyond their control, and that the team should focus on the collective effort and strategy. Others might suggest that a player's health is a critical factor in the team's overall performance, and that the Suns' success with Williams is a testament to their ability to manage and support player health.
